Shape memory materials have been used successfully for many decades in the technical and medical fields. Due to the progress in research, shape memory metals or alloys of shape memory metals have been used in medicine for many decades. In recent years shape memory polymers (in English: shape memory polymers) have also been increasingly used. Due to their polymer chain structure, these have the possibility that memory effects (e.g., an increase or decrease in diameter) can be activated by an external stimulus such as temperature. Since in medicine the possibility of additive manufacturing has many advantages regard to the individualization of patient-specific implants, differences between injection-molded shape memory polymers and ad-ditively manufactured shape memory polymers are investigated in this publication. Both mechanical properties according to DIN EN ISO 527-1 and the re-covery behavior due to the shape memory effect are compared. The aim of the publication is to investigate whether a change in material properties occurs due to additive manufacturing by means of material extrusion and thus whether changed mechanical or "memory" proper-ties can be observed. In this context, the mechanical investigations not only compare injection molded with additively manufactured multi-purpose test specimens, but also investigate the different load limits due to the selected filling pattern of the AM components. This publication concludes with a comparison of the results and the associated summary and outlook with regard to the application in medical implants.
